Online course – Jewelry Design/Repair? Penn Foster? Ashworth College?
Question by Melissa: Online course – Jewelry Design/Repair? Penn Foster? Ashworth College?
I’m interested in learning how to make jewelry, using metal mostly, and I’ve thought about taking a course so that I could become more proficient. I know that I could learn a lot of basic techniques from free instruction guides and jewelry making books, but I really wanted to take a course since I figured that would give me a broader range of instruction.
I looked around online and found GIA, but I DON’T have ,000 to take a course, so then I found Penn Foster and Ashworth. My sister once took a course through Allied Schools, so I’m familiar with the concept of Distance Learning and she seemed pleased with them, so I thought I’d be willing to give a school like that a try, but I’ve noticed that there have been a lot of mixed reviews. It seems like it’s sort of a hit or miss situation, especially depending on the course that people take.
Since this is a course that doesn’t really transfer to a ‘real world’ situation (meaning I’m not planning on going to a job and saying ‘here are my credentials’), this is more for my personal enrichment, I’m not really worried about whether or not I’ll be able to get a job, I’m just wondering if anyone has taken the course and felt they learned anything, from either school, or if anyone can offer a better alternative.
I’m also planning on making Steampunk-type jewelry, which requires disassembling watches and then reassembling their parts, which is why I was thinking of taking this sort of a course, since the repair portion could come in handy.

ashworth is great school and it is accredited by the detc but for designing jewelry I would not go to any online school i think you have to be physically their to see how it is done
