“My poetry is lousy you’ve said”, oh Lord, that’s the way, the two masters of lyrics talked to each other…
Somehow this song seems to be a document of a love, that could and maybe should have merged two charismatic personalities, but obviously was more inspiring in it’s failure.
Thank you for sharing this great song together with these well selected pictures !

@Kammerz10 Well, for me with Dylan, it’s like with Mike Oldfield: their songs shine if they do NOT sing them, but others do instead :-)

Note everybody: that one is Words & Music by Joan Baez!!! No third-party composition for a change. Love this to bits!

@punkminchen I feel her song is one of authentic feelings while Bob’s life and most of his biographies indicate he has not been able to adjust to reality.

  11. punkminchen says:

He just seems so bitter whilst Joan comes across so passionate within the pain! I thins its genius

@2007blazedale I understand what you are saying. The relationship was not meant to be. I’ve been critical about how it seems Joan Baez was treated by Bob Dylan.
As you said: …they could have been great even if they never met,”
The irony is that if they never met, then Joan would have never written this song. She would not have been inspired enough! She turned a negative experience into something beautiful, and for inspiring her to write that song, I do thank Bob Dylan.

    @MReineck
Many thanks. I believe I’ve been too critical about Bob Dylan. No question that he is great in every way, with the exception of how it seems he has treated Joan Baez. For such a tender person, she deserved a lot better.

BD: “You gonna sing that song about robin’s eggs and diamonds?” Bob had asked me on the first day of rehearsals.
    JB: “Which one?”
BD: “You know, that one about blue eyes and diamonds…”
JB: “Oh”, I said, “you must mean ‘Diamonds And Rust’

@StevePalRP Dylan is not a jerk…He followed in the path of destiny as best as he could. Everybody makes mistakes in life and wishes they could have done different about certin things. Maybe it just wasnt meant to be!! Somethings just happen that way. we dont have to understand it, but we should respect it. They are both great artist and while I think they could have been great even if they never met, I think that they are better today because of each other.

@airamhag Nobody really does… people (especially these particular two musicians!) can be very discreet on some topics…

@ZadZadrack yep the one with a catalogue 90% made up of other people’s songs is definitely the better artist

@StevePalRP Steve you win the best comment of the year award.

  25. StevePalRP says:

How can Bob Dylan possess the keen awareness and insight into the human psyche when it comes to everything else except Joan Baez? Bob, you can be a real jerk sometimes! But Joan, you have retained your class and beauty, both inward and outward beauty, throughout all of these years. And this is truly a beautiful song written unfortunately to a jerk.
Who sings Bob Dylan songs better than Bob Dylan?
    Answer: Joan Baez!
I doubt that Bob Dylan could do likewise. Hey Bob, sing this song!
