How do I register a jewelry design so that I can sell it?

Question by Tyler: How do I register a jewelry design so that I can sell it?
I have a cool homemade accessory made out of other store-bought items [not other pieces of jewelry]. My friends say it is very trendy and I am starting to think it looks a little professional myself! (Pro enough to be sold?)
I want to see if I can sell it or find a store to sell the design to. But I’m not sure how to register it as my own design.
What should I do?
Thanks!

    Hi,

Jewelers do not generally patent designs, even couture and fine jewelers. You can register a trademark, if you want to stamp your designs with your mark or logo. You would do that at the US patent and trademark office… http://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/index.jsp .

For the most part we make our designs and put them out there expecting that if we are successful we will eventually get knocked off. That is the way of the fashion world :)
