I wasn’t expecting anything incredible from this scale, given that it costs such a small amount of money compared to any comparable scale that I could find online after a quick search; nevertheless, it was a fairly disappointing purchase.

It is clear that this scale is not very precise. I tested its precision by keeping it in the same position and weighing the same object a number of times, without turning the scale off. Then I tried weighing an object, taking it off the scale, turning the scale off, then turning it back on and weighing the same object again. If you take an object off the scale and then put it back on in about the same place, without turning the scale off, you will usually get approximately the same reading. If you turn the scale off between measurements, however, you will most likely get a significantly different reading each time. For my purposes it was important to get a reading that was accurate to the milligram, which is the smallest increment measurable with this scale. In one instance, I weighed the same object twice and the difference in weight between each reading was 12 milligrams – quite a significant difference. Additionally, If you put an object on the scale and move its position even slightly, you will get a different reading. (I calibrated the scale properly, according to the instructions, before I tried measuring anything; so proper calibration was not the problem).

If it is not very important to you that your measurements be precise to the milligram, but it is very important to you that you not spend very much money, then this scale may work for your purposes, given that it is so relatively cheap.

its definatly a good product for the price but after a couple months the numbers start jumping around a little too much, i dont know how good it would be for jewelery but maybe drugs?

I have been buying gems on ebay and I’ve been having trouble keeping track of which is which. This scale is very accurate. I just put a stone on it and I know all the information on that piece because it matches the ct. weight provided. It is also very professional looking. It is a great deal for the price.

I ordered this on Monday and recieved it Wednesday, which is always nice. I already had a “American Weigh Signature Series Black AWS-100 Digital Pocket Scale, 100 by 0.01 G” with a different retailer’s label on it for comparison. I was hoping to get more digits of accuracy because the “old” scale only shows 0.2 grain increments.

The scale does read 0.001 gram (0.002 grain) increments, but the accuracy and repeatablity are questionable. I played with the scale for 10 minutes, weighing various items, to make sure that it was warm. Then I ran a series of on/off scale measurements with a single object (around 99 grains) and recorded the values. I was on a kitchen counter with a heavy top, so the support should have been adiquate and stable. I waited approximately 4-6 seconds for the measurement to stablize before recording the value. I attempted to gently put the object on and off the scale, as I would if I was really using it for the intended purpose.

I recorded 27 “zero” values and 26 “object” values (with the object on the scale). Starting with a tare, the zero values driffed from a high of 3.14 grains to a low of -0.26 grains, the average (Avg) was 1.03 and the standard deviation (SD) was 1.03 (repeated value is coincidental, I checked). The object values drifted from a high of 101.14 to a low of 97.88, the Avg was 99.3 and the SD was 1.03 (again, I checked the equations). If I calculated the difference between the “object” values and the preceding “zero” values, the Avg was 98.29 and the SD was 0.36 (which is better). If I calcuated the difference between the “object” and the next “zero” values, the Avg was 98.22 and the SD was 0.23 (the smallest seen).

Since i wanted to use the scale for powder and it would be difficult to weight it a bunch of times to calculate the differences, so I guess I just got a nice box to put on my shelf.

The old scale always comes back to 0.0 and the scatter is within the resolution of the display when you move it around the platform. It is half the price and more repeatable. BTW, it says the “object” is 98.6 grains. For what I need, repeatability is more important than accuracy. I need piles of powder that are the same size more than a particular size.

So, still looking for a better scale…

If you are needing the difference between 271 milligrams and 283 milligrams (random number), then you had better admit that you are one cheap sonova*****, and spend the serious money for the needed hair splitting quality. (C’mon don’t be so cheap! hehehe)

But, if it can be just a smidge off, then this is really a great little device. I love it. I weigh nutritional powders to get easily just about the right amount to toss in a shake. Its such a handy little device that gives me good measurements every time!
